F1 Beginner's Dictionary: Turbo Lag

That frustrating delay when a driver steps on the throttle, but the power ⚡ doesn’t kick in immediately.

You slam the gas, expect a rocket 🚀 launch, but — nothing. A split second of hesitation before the turbo finally wakes up and slams you into the back of your seat. That’s Turbo Lag.

It happens because the turbocharger 🔄 needs time to spool up and build pressure before it can deliver full power.

In the old days of F1, drivers had to wrestle with it like a wild animal 🏎️🔥 — especially in those insane 1,000-horsepower turbo monsters of the ‘80s. Today’s hybrid engines have electric assistance to smooth it out, but back then? It was either patience or a trip to the barriers 💥
