F1 Dictionary: Drag Reduction System

DRS (Drag Reduction System) is a game-changer on the 🏎️💨 straights. When a driver is within one second of the car ahead, they can open a flap in the rear wing to reduce drag and gain extra speed. Sounds like free overtaking? Not quite. It helps, but you still need skill to make the move stick.

Introduced in 2011, DRS was designed to spice up racing 🔄, making overtaking easier in an era when aerodynamics made it tough to follow another car. Some love it, some say it’s artificial — but one thing’s for sure: when that wing opens, things get interesting.
